This is a responsible, skilled and advanced technical position in the construction, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of protective relays, SCADA, fiber optic and related substation equipment. Also requires experience in designing and engineering new substations, modifying existing substations, CAD, preparing electrical specifications and price lists. Reports to the Relay Technician Supervisor and/or the Electric Substation Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

Coordinate and assist as necessary with the on-site installation and/or modification of protective relay schemes, SCADA, Fiber Optic and related equipment. Calculate new or review existing relay settings for application to the associated protective relays.

Reads and works from detailed electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. In the event of a system malfunction, may be called at home to respond to the situation at any hour, must assess the situation and use judgement to make appropriate repairs as quickly as possible to meet service demands. Communicates clearly and courteously to assist others.

Prepares handwritten investigation reports on equipment failures and system mis-operations. Keep accurate relay test reports and maintenance records of substation equipment. Requires manual dexterity to use desktop and laptop computer equipment in running automated relay tests.

Works with electrical engineers and contractors at the job site or in an office environment. Must possess a thorough knowledge of protective relay schemes,their correct application / operation and limitations of each scheme.

Required to follow switching orders issued by System Control Center, requiring the operation, locking-out and tagging of Transmission and Distribution substation circuit breakers, gang-operated switches, and hook-disconnects. Must be visually and audibly alert to detect hazards. Safety equipment issued includes safety manual, hard hat, hi-voltage rubber gloves, safety glasses, earplugs, and rain gear.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from High School, GED or Military training with supplemental training in Electrical Power Transmission and Distribution. Minimum of ten (10) years experience as a relay technician. Minimum five (5) years experience with computers, microprocessor controlled equipment (protective relaying and SCADA), fiber optics, and data communications. Or graduation from an accredited two-year technical school at college level with an Associate of Science Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with supplemental training in Electrical Power Transmission and Distribution with a minimum of five (5) years experience as a relay technician. Minimum three (3) years experience with computers, microprocessor controlled equipment (protective relaying and SCADA), fiber optics, and data communications.

Licenses/Certificates:

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida operator's driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Residency Requirement:

The employee must, within one year of date of hire or promotion to this position, reside with 30 minutes of the assigned work facility.

Supplemental Information

Must have a working knowledge of protection and control theory relating to electric power transmission and distribution substations. Must have the ability to design and engineer new substations and modify existing substations. Must have a working knowledge of CAD. Must be familiar with electrical specifications. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
