JEA Highlights Value of Public Power During National Public Power Week

Community,

JEA is joining public power utilities across the country in celebrating Public Power Week (Oct. 4–10), highlighting the benefits of locally-owned utilities and the value JEA delivers to customers.

“Public power means our customers and community are at the center of every decision we make,” Interim Managing Director and CEO Jody Brooks said. “At JEA, we’re focused on delivering safe, reliable services at the lowest cost possible. We take seriously our responsibility to be good stewards of our customers’ dollars.”

JEA serves more than 546,260 electric customers in Duval and parts of St. Johns and Clay counties. Its leadership team and seven-member board are committed to JEA’s mission and serving Northeast Florida.

The benefits of public power can be seen throughout JEA’s operations and community impact:

  • Focused on Northeast Florida: JEA provides essential services to customers and supports the City of Jacksonville through contributions to the city’s general fund -- not dividends to shareholders. The utility employs more than 2,300 team members and helps foster economic development and job growth in Northeast Florida.
  • Investing in reliability: JEA continues to strengthen its electric system and improve service reliability. In 2025, JEA achieved the lowest annual outage duration in its history — a 33% improvement since 2024.
  • Supporting customers: JEA manages costs responsibly to help minimize impacts on customers while offering rebates, tools and programs that can help customers conserve and save money. JEA also works with local agencies to assist customers facing financial hardship.
  • Building sustainability: JEA continues to diversify its energy mix with a goal of providing more affordable and reliable power to customers through a mix of fuels, while exploring new and emerging technologies. JEA continues to invest in resilient infrastructure designed to withstand hurricanes and other threats while ensuring reliable service for decades to come.
  • Serving our community: Service is at the heart of JEA’s culture. Employees volunteer thousands of hours each year in support of local nonprofit organizations, schools and initiatives that directly benefit Northeast Florida residents.

JEA is one of 33 public power utilities serving more than 4 million residential and business customers in Florida. Across the United States, 2,000 public power utilities serve 55 million people in 49 states and five U.S. territories.
