Lakeland Electric Customers Can Expect Lower Bills in October

Community,

Decrease to Lakeland Electric’s Fuel Charge: October 1, 2026

The Lakeland City Commission voted today to decrease the fuel charge to 4.7¢ per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for Lakeland Electric customers, effective October 1, 2026. For a customer using 1,000 kWh per month the adjustment lowers the fuel charge by $10.00, from $57.00 to $47.00.

This fuel change decrease means customers will see lower total bills in October, even with the approved base rate increase.

The volatility of the fuel market and demand is calming, allowing the utility to lower the fuel charge. The cost of fuel is passed directly to customers. Lakeland Electric makes no profit from the fuel charge. Like most electric utilities that generate their own power, Lakeland Electric adjusts its fuel charge to reflect actual market conditions and to maintain financial stability.

“The fuel charge decrease reflects real market savings we’re passing directly to our customers,” said Sandra Ruede, fuels manager. “That’s one of the benefits of public power that generates its own power.” We’re able to adjust charges quickly when market conditions improve.”

No Change to Environmental Compliance Cost

The environmental compliance cost was reviewed by the Utility Committee on September 4, 2026 and was confirmed to remain the same at $1.8506 per 1,000 kWh.

This charge covers the costs of items such as permit fees, chemicals, and other expenses related to environmental projects required for compliance with Environmental Protection Agency standards. The environmental charge is listed as a separate line item on customers' bills.
