OUC Customers Enjoy the Most Reliable Power in Florida

Community,

In back-to-back years OUC outperformed all major Florida utilities in outage duration and restoration speed

For the second consecutive year, OUC–The Reliable One delivered the highest electric reliability in the state, according to reports published this spring based on 2025 data submitted to the Florida Public Service Commission by investor-owned utilities. OUC’s nearly 300,000 customers experienced the shortest average interruption time of all Florida utilities. Key factors in OUC achieving these results include grid hardening, proactive infrastructure improvement efforts, and operational improvements for faster outage restoration.

“Our employees take great pride in living up to our name as The Reliable One,” said Attila Miszti, OUC Chief Operating Officer. “Delivering Florida’s shortest outages for a second year in a row reflects their hard work and our commitment to the reliability our customers expect.”

OUC’s electric service – spanning Orlando, St. Cloud and parts of unincorporated Orange and Osceola counties – was more reliable than investor-owned utility companies across the state in 2025 in key performance areas that measure overall electric reliability:

System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI): Measures the average amount of time a customer is without power during a year, excluding hurricanes. SAIDI is considered the best overall way to measure the reliability of electric service to customers in the industry. By this measure, OUC is 29% more reliable than the next closest finisher.

Customer Average Interruption Duration Index (CAIDI): Represents the average time to restore power when an outage occurs. OUC is 37% faster than the closest next closest finisher.

OUC significantly improved its own reliability metrics, doubling last year’s record SAIDI performance and improving CAIDI by 12% over 2024.

Beyond reliability, OUC is enhancing resiliency through innovative technologies. Smart grid devices prevented nearly 40,000 customer outages last year and over 90,000 in the past two years, including during strong storms.

OUC’s top results stem from investments in stronger system design, rigorous maintenance, and installation of new infrastructure and technology.

  • OUC recently completed major transmission upgrades, including a new 230 kV line to meet the growing electric demands of customers in St. Cloud and southeastern Orlando. New undergrounding projects are also being piloted to enhance reliability, building on the 68% of our system already underground.
  • OUC maintains 3,400+ miles of transmission and distribution lines across a 419-square-mile electric service area. Annual maintenance includes inspecting more than 68,000 utility poles, replacing wooden poles with concrete poles as needed, and pruning vegetation along nearly 1,000 miles of overhead lines each year.
  • Across OUC’s grid, thousands of automated smart devices help prevent outages and speed restoration times by detecting issues instantly and rerouting power – often restoring service in seconds. OUC continues to expand these smart technologies to enhance reliability.

OUC’s record reliability reflects both strong infrastructure investments and year-round planning, training and storm readiness. OUC teams are prepared to respond around the clock to storms and high demand, minimizing disruptions and supporting customer confidence. This commitment to preparation, innovation and fast, coordinated response ensures our community receives some of the most reliable power in Florida.
