Engineer, Senior (Mechanical/Power Generation Focus) - GRU

Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer, Senior to support its Energy Supply operations, with a strong emphasis on mechanical systems, power generation equipment, maintenance engineering, reliability, and capital project execution. This position performs advanced, independent professional engineering work requiring the application of complex engineering principles, sound technical judgment, and knowledge of current industry practices and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will provide engineering expertise in support of Energy Supply facilities, plant operations, equipment reliability, maintenance programs, capital projects, and continuous improvement initiatives. Responsibilities may include monitoring equipment performance, troubleshooting complex mechanical and operational issues, developing repair strategies, supporting maintenance planning and execution, participating in equipment commissioning, evaluating technical issues, developing engineering recommendations, and coordinating work across multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred experience and knowledge includes:
- Gas turbine maintenance, including equipment monitoring, troubleshooting, repair planning and execution, and commissioning.
- Steam turbine maintenance, including equipment monitoring, troubleshooting, repair planning and execution, and commissioning.
- Generator and exciter maintenance.
- Specification, monitoring, troubleshooting, repair planning and execution, and commissioning of major plant equipment, including: high-energy pumps,compressors, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, heat exchangers, solid-fuel conveyor systems, and water treatment components.
- Boiler maintenance, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and repair planning and execution.
- Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) methodologies and application.
- Capital project management, including budgeting, design review, development of job specifications, bid evaluation, contractor selection, project execution, commissioning, and coordination of training as required.
- Experience coordinating and managing contractors and journey-level craft technicians.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to solicit input, build support, and effectively collaborate with employees and stakeholders at various levels of an organization.
This role is well suited for an experienced engineer who can independently manage complex technical assignments, support the reliability and performance of critical generating assets, and coordinate maintenance and capital improvement activities from initial evaluation through implementation and commissioning. The position may also provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers and serve as an engineering resource to plant operations, maintenance personnel, contractors, and other technical stakeholders.
The Electrical Engineer, Senior classification is the third in GRU’s three-level engineering career series and incorporates the competencies and responsibilities associated with the Engineer, Associate and Engineer classifications.
GRU may fill multiple positions from this posting. This position may also be underfilled at a lower engineering classification based on the selected candidate’s education, experience, and qualifications.
Advanced, independent professional and technical engineering work requiring knowledge and application of the latest advancements in the field and knowledge of regulatory environment, and is fully accountable for work product.
Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision receiving technical guidance on unusual and non-typical complex problems and supervisor approval on plan proposals. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its lack of managerial responsibility and by its emphasis on the application of advanced engineering skills, development, implementation, and interpretation of policies, and coordination of small engineering staff to a part of a major project, a total project of moderate scope, or controversial project affecting the effectiveness of the organization.
Note: Engineer, Senior classification is the third in a series of three Engineer Classifications of progressively more demanding job competencies and engineering duties. It should be understood that the job competencies, duties and requirements of the Engineer, Associate and Engineer are inherently included in this position.
This position is being recruited at the Electrical Engineer, Senior level, which requires a minimum of six (6) years of qualifying experience. However, based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate, the position may be underfilled at a lower classification.

Electrical Engineer, Associate – Generally 0–2 years of qualifying experience
Salary Range: $61,812 – $92,719
Electrical Engineer – Minimum of four (4) years of qualifying experience
Salary Range: $80,402 – $120,604
The classification and starting salary of the selected candidate will be determined based on education, relevant experience, qualifications, and applicable compensation guidelines.
Essential Functions:
Depending on area of assignment:
- Performs work, which involves engineering practice, which may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, materials suitability, optimization of resources and design, and intricate coordination requirements.
- Work requires a broad knowledge in the specialty area and thorough knowledge of principles and practices of related specialties. May be responsible for development and implementation of project budgets.
- Ability to manage multiple projects or a major project often with unique or controversial issues, which have an important effect on major programs. Work may require oversight by management.
- Ability to write specifications with overall management direction.
- Designs, coordinates, evaluate, and supervise projects including planning, specifications, and construction monitoring.
- Cultivates and maintains effective business relationships with other engineering personnel, customers, contractors, suppliers, and representatives of regulatory agencies.
- Writes effective letters and complex reports.
- Develops and makes technical presentations.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited educational institution, Mechanical Engineering is preferred
Expected to keep abreast of the latest Engineering advancements in field. Continuing education required to maintain currency in assigned engineering discipline, regulatory and other related knowledge.
Six (6) years of experience in the area of assigned engineering responsibility. Appropriate co-op or internship time and/or an advanced degree in engineering, business or other relevant courses (e.g. planning, public administration, etc.) of study may be recognized for up to one year of experience.
May require supervisory experience.
Knowledge of electric utility transmission and distribution systems, including overhead and underground distribution expansions.
Knowledge of power system engineering principles, including three-phase systems, fault analysis, grounding, voltage regulation, and equipment ratings.
Skill in engineering software and modeling tools, such as Synergi, ETAP, EasyPower, PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, GIS, or equivalent systems.
Ability to interpret and develop technical drawings, one-lines, schematics, and specifications.
Knowledge of utility safety and engineering standards, including NESC, NEC, IEEE, and OSHA requirements.
Project management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with sound engineering judgment and risk-based decision-making.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to operational and executive audiences.
Ability to build collaborative relationships with field operations, contractors, consultants, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
Ability to work effectively during system emergencies and restoration events, including after-hours support when required.
