JEA Receives Statewide Recognition for Building Community, Excellence in Communications
JEA received two awards from the Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA), recognizing its investments in the community and efforts to raise awareness of public power. FMEA presented JEA a Building Strong Communities Award and Communications Award Nov. 3, during the association’s Energy Connections Conference & Trade Show in Tampa.
“It is an honor to be recognized for our commitment to serving customers, strengthening our community and delivering excellence in communications,” JEA Interim Managing Director and CEO Jody Brooks said. “I’m especially proud of more than 2,300 employees whose dedication and hard work make these achievements possible.”
FMEA recognized JEA and other public power utilities for programs and services that strengthen the communities in which they serve. JEA received recognition for the following community initiatives in the past year:
- Senior Day on the Road: JEA expanded its outreach efforts by bringing services directly to the places where seniors live, connect and gather. These efforts included Senior Day at the Beaches and a tour of 15 senior centers throughout Jacksonville.
- Chiefs’ Military & Veteran Food & Hygiene Drive Challenge: In response to the 2025 government shutdown, JEA launched an initiative to address food and hygiene insecurity in the community. Employees donated more than 6,000 pounds of food and hygiene items to benefit organizations serving the Jacksonville community, Downtown Ecumenical Services Council and LJD Jewish Family & Community Services.
- Hospital-to-Home: A pilot initiative in partnership with UF Health connects long-term hospital patients and individuals preparing for discharge with utility affordability programs and community resources that may support a successful transition home.
Additionally, JEA received FMEA’s inaugural Communications Award, recognizing the utility’s excellence in raising awareness of public power through storytelling. This award recognized a JEA video showing lineworkers and employees replacing a critical fiber optic line stretching across the Intracoastal from Neptune Beach to the San Pablo area.
FMEA is the statewide trade association representing Florida’s public power utilities. The association actively represents and advocates for member cities’ interests on a wide variety of state and federal issues, provides emergency response and mutual aid coordination, provides education and training for members and serves as a clearinghouse for industry news and information.
For more than a century, Florida municipal electric utilities have provided affordable, reliable electric service to their communities. As locally managed, community-owned organizations, they prioritize the needs and interests of the customers they serve, reinvesting resources back into their communities to support local priorities and improve quality of life.
