Florida Public Power Utilities Earn National Recognition for Electric Reliability

Association News,

Seven Florida municipal electric utilities have earned designation as a Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3)® from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for providing reliable and safe electric service. Earning the designation this year are Lakeland Electric, the City of Mount Dora, and Orlando Utilities Commission, and earning re-designation are Beaches Energy Services, Homestead Energy Service, Keys Energy Services, and Ocala Electric Utility. They join more than 250 public power utilities nationwide that hold the RP3 designation.

The RP3 designation, which lasts for three years, recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development, and system hardening and strengthening. Criteria include sound business practices and a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity.

“Receiving an RP3 designation is a great honor and a testament to the work these utilities are doing to follow industry best practices,” said Jeremy Ash, Chair of APPA’s RP3 Review Panel and General Manager at Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, Kansas. "These designees have distinguished themselves as committed to pursuing excellence and perpetual improvement for the benefit of their communities.”

In Florida, 13 utilities are recognized with the RP3 designation: City of Bartow, Beaches Energy Services, Fort Pierce Utilities Authority, Gainesville Regional Utilities, Homestead Energy Services, Keys Energy Services, Kissimmee Utility Authority, Lakeland Electric, City of Leesburg, City of Mount Dora, Ocala Electric Utility, Orlando Utilities Commission, and City of Tallahassee.

“We are incredibly proud of Florida's public power utilities earning this distinguished designation,” said Amy Zubaly, Florida Municipal Electric Association Executive Director. “Every day, our member utilities across the state work exceptionally hard to ensure reliable service to their communities, and it’s nice to see this hard work recognized on the national level.”
