FPUA Prepares for Hurricane Isaias

Fort Pierce Utilities Authority (FPUA) is keeping a watchful eye on Hurricane Isaias and staying informed of all advisories. Although the storm is forecast to stay to the east of Florida’s coast, FPUA is being proactive in their response to the threat of any potential impact. FPUA has decided to initiate the first phases of a five-phase storm response plan outlined in our comprehensive Storm Manual. “In an abundance of caution,” states John Tompeck, Director of Utilities, “we are securing all equipment and materials that could pose a threat caused by high winds. As the National Hurricane Center issues weather advisories for our area, FPUA will move to the appropriate storm phase, with each department following their individual action plan.”

As of 11:00 am today, Hurricane Isaias is a category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and is moving northwest at 16 mph. Isaias is expected to be near the Central Bahamas tonight and near the east coast of Florida Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles and tropical-storm- force winds extend outward up to 205 miles. At this time, it is expected that Fort Pierce will experience only tropical-storm force winds, with gusts up to 60 mph possible. Storm tracking information can be found at www.nhc.noaa.gov.

Although Fort Pierce is not expected to be in the direct path of the hurricane, we urge our customers to have a plan in place, prepare and stay up-to-date with the latest news and advisories.
