Individual Awards
FMEA’s Associate Member of the Year award is awarded annually to an individual associate member or associate member company that has shown exemplary service and dedication to FMEA and Florida’s public power community.
Criteria and Selection Process: Nomination of candidates for Associate Member of the Year may be made by any FMEA Regular Member. Nominations must be made in writing to the Executive Director. The Associate Member of the Year is selected annually by the FMEA staff from the nominations received and based on their involvement in FMEA activities and is affirmed by the Board of Directors President. Any current employee or official of any Associate Member is eligible.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is a high honor awarded to an individual who has devoted a significant part of their career to the advancement of public power in Florida.
Criteria and Selection Process: Any current or former employee or official of any Regular, Associate, or Affiliate Member, or of the Association itself is eligible. Nomination of candidates for the Lifetime Achievement Award may be made by any FMEA Regular Member. Nominations must be made in writing to the Executive Director. The Lifetime Achievement Award is selected periodically based on a nomination received or by the Executive Director with input from the Executive Committee.
Introduced in 2020, the Friend of Florida Public Power Award is a high honor that may be bestowed on an individual or organization whose leadership, acts, and support have significantly benefited Florida public power and Florida’s public power communities, utilities, and/or employees. The Friend of Florida Public Power makes significant contributions to the advancement of public power on a statewide level.
Criteria and Selection Process: Any individual or organization is eligible. Nominations of candidates for the Friend of Florida Public Power Award may be made by any FMEA Regular Member. Nominations must be made in writing to the Executive Director. Recipients are chosen by the Executive Director and affirmed by the FMEA Executive Committee.
Honorary Membership
Any Regular, Associate or Affiliate Member may be designated by the Board of Directors as an Honorary Member. An Honorary Member shall be a person who has been a Regular, Associate or Affiliate Member representative for a minimum of five years and whose practical, technical, economic or political knowledge in matters relating to municipal electric utilities has resulted in distinguished service to the membership of the Association and whose accomplishments, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, have entitled the Honorary Member to special recognition by the Association. Honorary Members are granted complimentary registration to all FMEA annual meetings and major workshops and seminars.
Criteria and Selection Process: Individuals are eligible for recognition as Honorary Members only when they have become ineligible to represent as a Regular, Associate or Affiliate Member. Honorary Members must be proposed in writing to the Board of Directors by at least five member representatives. The qualifications of the candidate in accordance with the criteria established above must be set forth in the written proposal.
Member of the Year Award
FMEA’s Member of the Year award is awarded annually to a member or group of members that have shown exemplary service and dedication to FMEA and Florida’s public power community.
Criteria and Selection Process: Nomination of candidates for Member of the Year may be made by any FMEA Regular Member. Nominations must be made in writing to the Executive Director. The Member of the Year is selected annually by the FMEA staff from the nominations received and based on their involvement in FMEA activities and is affirmed by the Board of Directors President. Any current employee or official of any Municipal Member is eligible.
Policymaker Award
FMEA’s Policymaker Award is awarded to a local elected or appointed official who has demonstrated a strong commitment to public power
Criteria and Selection Process: Nomination of candidates for the Policymaker Award may be made by any FMEA Regular Member. Nominations can be made at this link. The Policymaker Award is selected annually by the FMEA staff from the nominations received and based on their involvement in FMEA activities and is affirmed by the Board of Directors President. Any current employee or official of any Associate Member is eligible.

Rising Star Award
FMEA’s Rising Star award recognizes an up-and-coming leader who has five or less years of service to their public power utility, who has made significant and sustained contributions to their utility, and has demonstrated a dedication to the goals and principles of public power through problem solving, creativity, and job knowledge.
Criteria and Selection Process: Nomination of candidates for the Rising Star Award may be made by any FMEA Regular Member. The Rising Star Award is selected annually by the FMEA staff from the nominations received and based on their involvement in FMEA activities and is affirmed by the Board of Directors President. Any current employee or official of any Associate Member is eligible.

FMEA’s Associate Member of the Year award is awarded annually to an individual associate member or associate member company that has shown exemplary service and dedication to FMEA and Florida’s public power community.
Criteria and Selection Process: Nomination of candidates for Associate Member of the Year may be made by any FMEA Regular Member. Nominations must be made in writing to the Executive Director. The Associate Member of the Year is selected annually by the FMEA staff from the nominations received and based on their involvement in FMEA activities and is affirmed by the Board of Directors President. Any current employee or official of any Associate Member is eligible.
Since 2015, FMEA’s Building Strong Communities Award recognizes Florida public power utilities for their community-focused programs. Previously named the Community Service Award, recipients are recognized for their efforts to offer programs and services that enhance the quality of life of their community.
Criteria and Selection Process: FMEA Member utilities are required to submit an award application describing the programs and services being offered.

The Communications Award is selected annually by the FMEA staff from the nominations received and based on their involvement in FMEA activities and is affirmed by the Board of Directors President. Any current employee or official of any Associate Member is eligible.

FMEA’s Restoring Communities Award recognizes Florida public power utilities that have either provided or received mutual aid following significant weather events or emergency situations to other utilities in need or provided exemplary service to their own community following significant emergency events.
For the past 30 years, FMEA has recognized Florida public power utilities’ focus on worker safety as their top priority and their efforts to ensure crew safety.
Criteria and Selection Process: FMEA Member utilities are placed into categories based on their total annual worker-hours worked and rewarded for the most incident-free records. The incidence rate used to judge utilities is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses compared to the total number of worker-hours, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
FMEA’s Utility Award of Excellence honors FMEA member utilities that have distinguished themselves during the year for their exemplary system enhancement, improvement, investment or other innovative efforts to improve Florida public power.
Criteria and Selection Process: Nomination of candidates for the Utility Award of Excellence may be made by any FMEA Regular Member. The Utility Award of Excellence is selected annually by the FMEA staff from the nominations received and based on their involvement in FMEA activities and is affirmed by the Board of Directors President. Any current employee or official of any Associate Member is eligible.
